“I made the conscious decision to be an artist about two years ago,” says, Val Pulido. “But I’ve been studying art and design for about 10 years.” When asked about his artistic history, Val says he didn’t grow up in what some might consider a typical art environment. “We are a quirky, bunch,” he says of his family, “but I wouldn’t have called us creative.

Twelve local non-profit organizations have been awarded a total of $25,900 to fund high-quality artistic or cultural programs through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs 2012 Regional Regranting Minigrant Program.

Before she could talk, Barb Hranilovich was making art, taking to the walls with her own indelible mark. She then got her very first artist space. “I had a little table, with my crayons and my scissors. That was my happy place,” she says.
Now art happens in everything Barb does. “I like being an artist,” she says. “I like that title. It’s just the “who” of me. If I cook, garden, all of it comes from the same place.”

If Craig Mitchell Smith could use only one word to describe his current success, it would probably be “serendipitous.” A little over a year ago he thought his dream of being an artist might have to remain just that—a dream. “I was really, really struggling and on the verge of giving up,” says Craig. “I was thinking I was just going to go be a waiter in Portland, Oregon.”

Weary of some of the competitive aspects of art education and the art world, in college Kate tried out some other avenues, but kept coming back to art. “I tried really hard not be an artist, but in the end, I knew it was what I had to do.”

Volunteers from the Lansing community will celebrate the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service by joining the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, muralists Erika Magers and Brian Snyder, and community participants of all ages to create a mural commemorating Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 17. The “Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. Through Creative Service” mural project will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Black Child and Family Institute, located at 835 W. Genesee St. in Lansing.

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing is pleased to announce that Selma Hollander and the late Stanley Hollander have been awarded the Arts Council’s Applause Award and Lansing-based Jackson National Life Insurance Company has been awarded the Arts Council’s Business Arts Award.

The City of East Lansing and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing will host an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 13 to share exciting information about the Downtown East Lansing Cultural Entrepreneurship Program. The open house will take place from 4-6 p.m. at the Spartan Dance Center, 217 Albert St.

All-of-us Express Children's TheatreThe Arts Council of Greater Lansing recently awarded $17,562 to local arts and cultural agencies for the second year of its Collaborative Arts Grant Program. Funded by the Council’s Arts Advancement Endowment Fund, the grants encourage local organizations to work together on new projects that promote arts and culture in the community.
