Economic Impact of the Arts in Michigan

The arts enrich our lives, but they also have a positive effect on the economic health of Michigan's communities. Based upon a recent study commissioned by the Michigan Nonprofit Research Program (MNRP) and conducted by the W. E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research entitled, Economic Benefits of Michigan's Art and Cultural Activities, did you know that:

  • Michigan arts and cultural activities currently support, directly or indirectly, 108,000 jobs in Michigan?
  • Nearly $2 billion is generated each year by Michigan arts and cultural activities?
  • In 2004 the average household expenditure was $30.72 per month on arts and cultural activities?
  • Nearly 40% of the household surveyed indicated that they would travel outside of the state for arts and cultural activities if they were not available in Michigan?
  • One-third of respondents felt that the quality and availability of arts and cultural activities would play a major role in their next relocation decision?
  • That people visiting Michigan spend $65.7 million dollars annually on arts and cultural activities?
