Creative State Michigan Report

Creative State Michigan Report

This morning, ArtServe released a new report, entitled Creative State Michigan that details the impact Michigan’s arts and cultural nonprofit organizations have on the state’s economy. The report represents Fiscal Year 2009 data from 211 nonprofit arts and cultural organizations – representing an estimated 10% of the sector. Click here to download the two page PFD report.

Creative State Michigan shows that these 211 organizations contributed nearly half a billion dollars ($462,791,322) in direct expenditures to the economy of Michigan in 2009. Further, it finds that for every $1 invested by the state, the arts and culture nonprofit sector contributed $51 into the Michigan economy. (Download our document detailing the formula for this statistic.)

We have always known that Michigan’s arts and cultural nonprofit organizations had a tremendous impact on the state’s economy – but not until now have we had access to the reliable and comprehensive data needed to back it up. Creative State Michigan does just that – demonstrating not only the economic but social impact the state’s nonprofit arts organizations have on Michigan and its citizens.

Highlights of the report (211 arts nonprofit organizations from FY 2009):
  • $462,791,322 in annual direct expenditures (e.g. rent, programs, travel and salaries)
  • For every $1 invested by the state, the arts and culture nonprofit sector contributed $51 into the Michigan economy.
  • 12,667,492 people made visits to arts and cultural venues and events – of which 52% were FREE
  • 1,841,368 school children experienced arts and cultural events – inclusive of 25,259 youth and school group visits.
For a while we have heard some mention state funding of the arts as a handout – Creative   State Michigan is proof that any such statement is simply incorrect. We look forward to using this report during the upcoming state budget process to further make our case for increased funding for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
