Call to Artists: “City Pulse” Seeks Artists to Submit Cover Art for “Summer of Art” Program

Weekly Magazine to Feature Local Cover Art

ARTIST GUIDELINES

The Opportunity 
“City Pulse” and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing are joining forces once again as part of the “City Pulse” “Summer of Art” Program. The program will feature original art by area artists on the cover of City Pulse each week for up to 11 weeks, beginning June 14.

Eligibility
Anyone who lives in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties may submit entries. 

How to Apply
Upload your submission on “Slideroom” (lansingarts.slideroom.com). Submission must include high-­quality images suitable for display on the front cover of “City Pulse” and an artist statement. 

Deadlines
Submissions are excepted on a rolling basis until all covers are filled and may be made from now until 11:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2017. Special deadlines for themed issues are listed below. 

Submission Specs
Choose up to two images that best represent your work and that will best translate to 10.25″ W X 6.5″ H front cover. (Art does not need be exactly these dimensions, but it needs to be a rectangle of approximately those proportions or be able to be cropped to meet them.) 

Submissions must be print quality at 300 dpi. No self ­images, promotional or commercial advertisement images will be considered. 

Artwork must be suitable for public space and not contain salacious or profane images. “City Pulse” reserves the right to crop any artwork to fit the space allocated.

Special Issues
In addition, “City Pulse” has identified three special themed issues that will run during this time frame and artists may optionally submit one artwork for each of these themed issues. Please identify by name or date if your submission is intended to be considered for one of these themed issues:

June 14 – Gay Pride: Submit by 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 26.
June 21 – Food Issue: Submit by 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 2.
June 28 –  Independence Day: Submit by 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 9. 

Image submission requirements
Accepted files: jpeg
Resolution: 300 dpi or larger 

Review Process
“City Pulse” staff will review all submissions and make final decisions for placement between June 14 and Aug. 19, 2017. The review team will base their decisions on the following criteria:  

Quality of artwork submitted

Creativity used in creating image/artwork

Suitability of image for front cover of City Pulse

Artists Notification
Artists will be notified after Friday, June 9, 2017, if they have been accepted as a cover artist.  Auction of ArtworkIf chosen as a “City Pulse” cover artist, artist must donate his/her original artwork to the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. The original art will then be auctioned at a silent auction during the Arts Council’s annual Holiday Glitter event. Artists will be compensated 30% of the winning bid on their artwork. If the artwork is not purchased, it will be retained by the Arts Council until successfully purchased.

Last year’s auction raised over $2,200, with over $660 going to the artists and the rest benefiting the Arts Council.

Additional Marketing
In addition to having their image on the front cover, a short bio on the artist will also appear elsewhere within the “City Pulse” publication. Chosen covers will also be featured on the Arts Council of Greater Lansing’s website and on all social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
