Wednesdays at 1210
What: Open art session each Wednesday of the month
When: 9am until 5pm
Where: 1210 Turner Street, Old Town Lansing, MI 48906
Cost: $7.00 full day session or $5.00 half day session
The concept of Wednesdays at 1210 is to provide a comfortable and creative salon setting for artists of all stripes to meet and share their work. From its beginning as a gallery, Studio 1210 in Old Town Lansing has always been intended as a working studio for community artists.
Sharing ideas, materials and marketing resources are necessary for all artists at different times. We are building a space where a variety of media are being used simultaneously, enabling participants to consider new applications immediately without previous classes. Although 1210 open sessions are not structured art classes, they will become shared learning experiences. An oil pastel, a colored pencil, a piece of gold leaf or a new solvent can all lead in totally new directions if they appear to the artist at a pivotal moment in creating.
Ideally, participants will feel comfortable trading materials, experimenting with new papers, grounds and media. Many materials will remain on-hand at the Studio for community use. The studio will grow and evolve as users feel their needs develop. With planning, still life, live models or video tutorials can all be a focus of individual sessions. Some limited instruction will be available as well as opportunities for discussion of your work, both the creative process and the results.
The most valuable resource Studio 1210 may provide is the morning you feel least inclined to use it. Creative energy, good will and differing perspectives are invaluable. The Studio can become the easiest, most accessible places to re-energize and renew, a safe place to get unstuck or provide artists with new challenges.
Wednesdays at 1210 the Studio is open to any creative opportunity we bring to it.

Funding - Contemporary Performing Arts
Letters of Intent Accepted Starting September 15, 2010
The MAP Fund works to help build a risk-welcoming contemporary performance field by providing project-specific funding to playwrights, choreographers, directors, composers, and performers experimenting in any performance tradition or discipline. The fund seeks especially to support work that brings insight to the issue of cultural difference or the concept of "other," be that in class, gender, generation, ethnicity, or formal consideration.
Letters of Inquiry will be accepted beginning September 15, 2010, from organizations based in the United States that have 501(c)(3) tax status under the Internal Revenue Code. Unincorporated artists or ensembles may apply to MAP through an eligible fiscal sponsor. Organizations and artists must demonstrate at least two years' professional experience.
MAP supports only projects that contain a live performance. Eligible projects must not have premiered anywhere in the world before the first date of the current grant activities period (September 1, 2011, through August 31, 2013). The touring or documentation of work that has already premiered is not eligible for funding. MAP does not fund projects whose main purpose is educational (e.g., art-in-the-schools or artistic training programs). MAP does not fund general operating expenses or festivals or contests.
Up to forty grants, ranging from $10,000 to $45,000, will be awarded per annual cycle. The average award amount is $25,000. MAP supports most direct costs related to the conception, creation, and premiere of a new work. These include but are not limited to commissioning fees and artists' salaries, research costs, rehearsal and workshop expenses, promotion, and audience outreach and production costs up to and including the premiere run of the work.
Visit the MAP Fund website for complete program information and application procedures.
Funding - NEH Grants
Grants for America's Media Makers support projects in the humanities that explore stories, ideas, and beliefs that deepen our understanding of our lives and our world.
The Division of Public Programs supports the development of humanities content and interactivity that excite, inform, and stir thoughtful reflection upon culture, identity, and history in creative and new ways. Grants for America's Media Makers should encourage dialogue, discussion, and civic engagement, and they should foster learning among people of all ages.
To that end, the Division of Public Programs urges applicants to consider more than one format for presenting humanities ideas to the public. NEH offers two categories of grants for media projects, Development Grants and Production Grants. Development grants enable media producers to collaborate with scholars to develop humanities content and format and to prepare programs for production. Development grants should culminate in the refinement of a project's humanities ideas, a script, or a design document for (or a prototype of) digital media components or projects, or a prototype for a digital media project together with a detailed plan for outreach and public engagement in collaboration with partner organizations. Production grants support the preparation of a program for distribution. Applicants must submit a script for a radio or television program, or a prototype or storyboard for a digital media project, that demonstrates a solid command of the humanities ideas and scholarship related to a subject. The script for a radio or television program, or prototype or storyboard for a digital media project, must also show how the narrative elements, visual approach, and interactive design combine to present the project's humanities ideas.
Applicants must have consulted with appropriate scholars about the project and obtained their commitment as advisers. Finally, applicants must have recruited the media team, including at a minimum the producer, director, writer, and, for a digital media project, the interactive designer. Applications may be submitted for any phase of a project. Applicants are not required to obtain a development grant before applying for a production grant. Applicants may not, however, submit multiple applications for the same project at the same deadline. An applicant must choose whether to apply for development or production of a particular project. If an application for a project is already under review, another application for the same project cannot be accepted. More information at: www.neh.gov/grants
Funding for Indigenous Contemporary Arts
The National Museum of the American Indian's Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program offers support to a wide range of arts activities with the goal of increasing the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary Native American arts. The NMAI considers the recognition of living artists of the Western Hemisphere and Hawaii to be of primary importance and will give awards to projects that strengthen the scholarship in this underserved field and create opportunities for new and innovative work.
NMAI's Exhibitions and Publications program awards grants of $7,500 to $15,000 to support exhibitions, installations, publications, and critical writing that interpret and present the work of contemporary Native visual artists to the public and encourage dialogue and critical commentary. At least one-half of the proposed project team (artists, authors, curators, etc.) must be Native American or Native Hawaiian. Awards are given to nonprofit or education-based organizations. Project budgets must show a minimum 50 percent match by the applicant organization or other anticipated sources.
NMAI's Expressive Arts program awards grants of up to $10,000 to support the creation and presentation of new works through the collaboration of two or more Native artists. Awards will specifically support the creation of new works for public performance that may include, but is not limited to, music, dance, spoken word, electronic media, costume design, mask making, set design, performance art, photography, painting, and other forms of expressive culture. Call for Participants - Old Town Paint Out
Date: September 11, 2010 from 10am-5pm
For the first time ever, Old Town will be the only community in Michigan taking part in a WORLDWIDE event called the International Plein Air Paint Out! A community that takes part in a "Paint Out" welcomes artists to their district and invites them to spend the day creating a painting made outdoors, using the local scenery as their inspiration.
The organization sites this as their mission:
International Plein Air Painters is a blanket organization created for the sole purpose of advancing the execution and enjoyment of plein air painting without the restrictions and limitations of borders or regions.
In essence, this is an event that the entire world takes part in (seriously - check out their website: http://i-p-a-p.com - and look at all of the places it's taking place this year) for no other purpose than to create some site-specific artwork outside, as part of a larger celebration of art around the globe, and then to put that art work on display that same day.
In classic Old Town fashion, we're going to forge a path and be the only location in Michigan to take part in this event on September 11, 2010! Whether there's 5 or 500 artists in Old Town, this will be a hugely exciting and new way to show the world just why Old Town is the creative hub of Lansing! SO if you're an artist, if you know artists, or if you just want to be a part of this worldwide event right here in your own community, come down on Sept. 11 within the time frame of 10-5pm. That evening, and the next day for First Sunday Gallery Walk, all of the artwork will be on display at HAZE Art Studio for the public to enjoy/purchase. All proceeds will go back to the artists.
For more information, call the OTCA at (517) 485-4283.

Exhibit Information
"Flesh Tones"
Photographer Suellen Hozman
Creole Gallery in Old Town Lansing
2011
About the Exhibit
Everyone has flesh. It is the largest organ of our body. It changes in its appearance, smell, feel, and taste during our lifetime. You might say it fleshes out. Lets honor the infinite visual variety of flesh with grace.
Lets celebrate the natural and acquired decorations of our flesh; color, pimples, freckles, wrinkles, scars, birthmarks, stork bites, skin tags, moles, rashes, acne, scaly patches, plus medical things like keloid scars, eczema, hemangiomas, vitiligo, albinism, melanoma, rosacea, tinea and more.
Flesh Tones will rejoice in the beautiful variety of flesh.
The show will be primarily portraits with the inclusion of flesh decorations.
These shows only happen with your support. So, please let me know if you would like to participate. Let me know how you would describe your flesh color and let me know what other flesh decorations you have and where they are on your flesh.
As always, I only photograph people who want to be photographed. I only use photos that are approved. I will maintain a spreadsheet to try to include all colors and flesh decorations.
This is an opportunity to give sanctuary and celebration to the rainbow of color and decorations of flesh. If you know of anyone with any of these flesh decorations who would like to be in the show please have them contact me or give me their name and contact information and I will contact them.
