Arts Council of Greater Lansing Announces “Art in the Sky” Billboards

Six Greater Lansing Area Artists to Be Featured in 2020/2021

LANSING, MICH. — The Arts Council of Greater Lansing is excited to announce the launch of its 2020/2021 “Art in the Sky” billboards, featuring the work of six Greater Lansing area artists.

Now in its 11th year, the billboard program was made possible through a successful collaboration with local business, Adams Outdoor Advertising and multiple partnerships with Arts Council member artists from across the Tri-County region. Together, they have been able to provide a collective body of diverse public art to the region’s residents and visitors while also marketing the artists’ own individual entrepreneurial pursuits.

“The ‘Art in the Sky Billboard Project’ is one of the most recognized public art initiatives in our region. People remember the billboards and look forward to their arrival each year,” said Arts Council executive director, Meghan Martin. “This year, they have even more significance, reflecting our experience of having to view art from afar and giving area artists the opportunity to truly have their work seen on a grand scale,” Martin said.

The 2020/2021 billboards will feature each artist’s work individually for two months on multiple boards throughout Greater Lansing and beyond in conjunction with a two-week splash of all six artist billboards that will begin in the new year.

This year, 19 Greater Lansing area artists submitted work for consideration for the 2019/2020 billboard program. The six final pieces were chosen through a careful scoring process by an esteemed panel of virtual judges. This year’s awardees include regional artists Cheryl Grabski, Laura Gajewski, Kelly Hansen, Sara Pulver, Stephanie Gregg and Joe Erikson.

“This project and its ability to make art available to all is an important component of the Arts Council’s mission,” said Martin. “The art is there for all to see and enjoy, and it enhances the vibrancy of our region as we move toward an art-centered region and tourist destination.”

To date, the Arts Council’s “Art in the Sky” initiative has featured the works of nearly 75 individual artists, bringing art to the masses via the medium of outdoor advertising.
