Arts Council Offers Free WordPress Website-Building Workshop in 2018

Have you always wanted an artist website of your own? The Arts Council is pleased to present Lansing blogger and cartoonist Daniel J. Hogan (danieljhogan.com and clattertron.com) who will show you the steps to easily create your own artist website using the content management system, WordPress.

This three-hour workshop will walk you through the basics, so you can build the site you’ve always wanted, all on your own! Note: The goal of this workshop is to teach you the fundamentals of WordPress. Come prepared to work, learn and have fun, while gaining the skills you need to create your website at home.

The workshop will cover:

-Creating an account and website on wordpress.com

-The pros/cons of paying to host a website or using a free service

-How to select the look of a WordPress site by changing its “theme”

-Adding pages to your website (what kind and what they should say)

-Adding blog posts to your website and blog post writing tips

-How to add photos, videos and links to your pages and blog posts

-Information on preparing images for use on your site (size, quality, etc.)

-Adding sidebars to your site and what they should contain

-Q & A

-Other topics as time allows include, SEO/online writing tips, social media, using HTML, newsletters and more

Before the workshop:

-Have an email address you can easily access for setting up your wordpress.com account during the workshop, or create a new free email account at gmail.com (just make up a name and use it for the class)

Recommendations:

-Come with a laptop or tablet you can use to follow along, or a way to take notes

-A strong understanding of basic computer and website use is highly recommended

This event takes place on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, from 9 a.m.- noon at Michigan Realtors (please use rear entrance of the building) located at 720 N. Washington Ave., Lansing, MI 48906 (across from Durant Park between Saginaw and Oakland streets)
