What started as a conversation among board members and Arts Council of Greater Lansing staff, has now become a pivotal strategy in the delivery of all of our programs and services in the tri-counties. The strategy – Creative Placemaking!
Creative Placemaking is a community and economic development strategy that is used to revitalize neighborhoods and activate space using arts and culture as the driving force. With funding from the Greater Lansing Regional Prosperity Initiative, the Arts Council of Greater Lansing was given the opportunity to work deeply with three communities in 2017 – St. Johns, Mason and Eaton Rapids-- to facilitate community conversations that inspire ideas, events and projects with a focus on creative placemaking. The ultimate goal is for each of the communities to identify resources to implement small projects this fall that will revitalize, invigorate and activate public spaces in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton Counties.
The Arts Council’s CREATE PLACE initiative allows for ideas to be shared around both the successes and challenges of using the arts as a driver of community and economic development. Consulting includes two meetings in each community – the first will bring together the movers and shakers as well as the implementers and doers to brainstorm ideas and activities, and the second meeting will outline an implementation plan for select projects. At the end of the two meetings, the Arts Council will provide each community with written documentation, including details of tangible projects and implementation strategies to complete in the next year. The Arts Council will also follow-up monthly with the group and provide technical assistance if needed.
We believe that creative placemaking is at the root of a powerful transformation in the Greater Lansing region and that we are on the precipice of great change. Creative Placemaking will be the driving force of community revitalization in the 21st century. It promises more adaptive ways of seeing, understanding, experiencing and transforming where we live, how we work, what we dream.
