The Young Creatives Guide provides Lansing’s young creatives, their parents and their teachers with a listing of classes, camps, lectures, workshops and more for anything from writing to dancing to theatre and beyond!

The Artisan Alcove

Drawing Classes

Youth drawing classes! Hour-long sessions focusing on drawing styles and techniques the child is interested in. We will work on things the student may be having challenges with or a prepared lesson. Beginner to intermediate. Classes take place in Williamston at local artist Matt Mulford's studio/shop, The Artisan Alcove.


All-of-us Express Children's Theatre

Theatre Productions - Main Stage

Dates: Four times a year
Age Range: 6-18
Cost: $60-$130

All-of-us Express Children's Theatre offers youth the opportunity to take part in every aspect of theatre production from acting, technical production, costume design to set construction. It brings four major productions to the Greater Lansing community each year with the help of hundreds of youth from throughout the region, include a summer musical. Most scholarships cover 75 percent of fees.

Drama Camps

Dates: Summer 2021
Age Range: 6-15

All-of-us Express Children's Theatre drama camps are for ages 6-15. Camps are grouped by age range. In 2021, there will be some virtual and some in-person camp options. Each weeks is a different theme and participants build a story around the theme and perform it live on Friday. One and two week camps will be offered. Scholarships available.

Theater Workshops

Dates: Varies
Age Range: 9-18

All-of-us Express Children's Theatre holds a variety of workshops and classes. Ages and costs vary depending on the specific workshops. Past workshops/classes include Studio Classes, Shakespeare intensive program and All-of-us On Air: A Podcast Drama and Playwriting Experience.

MSU Community Music School

Private Lessons

Dates: Weekly sessions, Monday-Saturday

Receive one-on-one instruction with weekly private lessons for students of all ages and skill levels. Offered year round, lessons are structured into 30-, 45- or 60-minute sessions and are scheduled around student and teacher availability. Lessons are available for a variety of disciplines including the following: piano, strings, woodwinds and brass, percussion, voice, carillon, jazz and composition and theory. Tuition includes weekly lessons, occasional group lessons, school-wide recitals and occasional guest masterclasses. Financial assistance is available.

Children and Youth Choirs

Dates: Weekly, time varies based on choir
Age Range: 7-18
Cost: Varies by choir

Sing, learn and meet new people through the Children and Youth Choirs. Each choir needs enthusiastic, talented and creative singers, ready to work hard, challenge themselves and have fun! Informal auditions are required for each choir - no prepared materials are needed.

Learn alongside music lovers in one of CMS’ classes and/or ensembles. Designed to reach people of all ages and skill levels, classes/ensembles include the following: Beginning Violin, Chamber Strings, Spartan Youth Jazz, group piano for youth and adults, as well as Beginning Ukulele, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and New Horizons Ensembles (chamber, jazz and orchestra). Suzuki group classes are also offered to students enrolled in Suzuki method lessons. Financial assistance is available.

Middle School Band Camp

Dates: TBD
Age Range: 10-14
Cost: $225

Use this summer to receive instrument-specific instruction from highly-qualified and accredited musicians in both large groups and sectionals. Explore music through musicianship classes and perform alongside other talented students from the Lansing area. The Middle School Band Camp is a five-day summer camp designed for students, ages 10-14, who have completed at least one year of instrumental study. Time spent studying and rehearsing culminates in a concert for family and friends.

"Time to Shine" Musical Theatre Camp

Age Range: Grades 2-12

Explore the world of musical theatre at the “Time-to-Shine” Musical Theatre Camp for elementary, middle and high school students. Time is spent learning songs from popular Broadway musicals while focusing on solo and ensemble voice development, choreography, prop design and more! More information coming soon! Details yet to be determined due to COVID-19. Financial assistance is available.

Beginning Strings Camp

Dates: August 2 - 6, 2021
Age Range: 6-12
Cost: $140

Get hands-on introduction to playing the violin, viola or cello at the Beginning Strings Camp. This five-day summer day camp gives children, ages 6-12, the opportunity to work with professional string teachers to learn and play the instrument of their choice and participate in singing and music theory games. Instruments are provided for students who do not have one. A performance will be held on the last day of camp. Financial assistance is available.


Red Cedar Writing Project

Greenrock Writers Retreat

Dates: July 12-16, 2021
Age Range: 8th grade through rising 12th grade

Greenrock Writers Retreat is a four-day camp for high school students with a passion for writing. Virtual workshops are designed to encourage participants to view writing as both personally meaningful and pleasurable, as well as to improve student writing ability. Students who are incoming ninth graders through outgoing twelfth graders in high school are invited to apply, regardless of writing proficiency. As a Greenrock participant, you will work with a variety of teenagers from a multitude of high schools across Michigan, and you will explore and improve your talents as a writer, both creatively and academically.

Spartan Writing Camp

Dates: The weeks of 6/21, 6/28, 7/12 and 7/19
Age Range: Elementary and middle school students

Since 1994, Spartan Writing Camp has invited elementary and middle school writers to explore their love of writing with countless opportunities to write about the thoughts, ideas and experiences that move them. Camp instructors, who are experienced teachers and Red Cedar Writing Project (RCWP) Teacher Consultants (TCs), help students nurture and develop the writer within using all manner of virtual instruction as inspiration.


MSU Community Music School

Early Childhood Music

Dates: Weekly
Age Range: Birth - 7
Cost: Varies based on length of session

Begin to lay a foundation for lifelong music through the Early Childhood program created for children ranging from infancy to age 7. Based on the research of Edwin Gordon, this curriculum is designed to increase children’s music aptitude through engaging musical activities, including singing and chanting, moving to music, playing assorted percussion instruments and pattern instruction. Curriculum will advance as the child ages. Classes are offered during the fall/spring/summer semesters. Financial assistance is available.

Music Therapy

Experience the power of music. Music therapy is a medically recognized form of therapy that uses various music therapy techniques, appropriate for the clients’ needs and abilities effectively treats special needs including those arising from medical illnesses, developmental disabilities, physical impairments, emotional disturbances, autism, sensory impairments, specific learning disabilities and gaining - all while having fun! Music therapy services are offered in individual or group settings. Financial assistance available.

Eric “RicStar” Winter Music Therapy Camp

Dates: June 15-18, 2021

Don’t miss the summer camp that’s all about making music and having fun! The Eric “RicStar” Winter Music Therapy Camp is a one-of-a-kind, inclusive music therapy camp for ALL people, including children, youth, adolescent and adult campers with special needs and their siblings. It includes songwriting, sing-a-longs, instrument playing, movement, improvisation and ends with the Be a Star Showcase: an inspiring performance by campers. Camp will be completely virtual in summer 2021.
